Costae
2021
Costae is the latin name for 'ribs'
This is my response to the brief of light and multiples. I had immediately thought about multiples in anatomy, which led me to ribs and the barrel shape of the ribcage. Developing this idea further, I made a series of cardboard maquettes to look at different patterns of rib arch placement over an underlying mirror. I used the mirror to give the illusion of enclosure and that the arches formed continuous circles. A theme I continued by sand blasting circles on to the mirror surface. The ribs were initially clear glass, but when I put the piece together, it wasn't right and seemed to be missing something. That was when I had the idea of covering the ribs with dichroic film, to give them a more dynamic and colourful effect, which worked wonderfully. I love the way that this piece constantly changes depending on the angle it is viewed from.
In this portfolio, I have also provided photos of my making process, as to me, it is an important part of my work.
