Portrait of Clair Tompkins, British bio-artist.

I’m a bio-artist drawn to the quiet spaces where transformation happens slowly - where roots tangle, decay feeds growth, and overlooked details begin to speak. With a background in science, I approach making as both observation and experiment, working with natural materials that shift, grow, or resist control.

My process often begins with a question or moment of curiosity. I’m fascinated by how materials hold memory, how life leaves its mark, and how nature might act as a collaborator. I work slowly and experimentally, welcoming unpredictability and allowing forms to evolve over time.

I see myself as both maker and witness - tending, guiding, and responding. Whether I’m growing roots in the shape of bones or documenting what doesn’t go to plan, I aim to create work that feels reflective: quiet, thoughtful, and a little uncanny.
